Pressure Equipment Directive (97/23/EC)

Pressure Equipment Directive applies to the design, manufacture and conformity assessment of pressure equipment such as steam boilers, pressure vessels, piping, safety valves having maximum pressure more than 0.5 bar gauge. Transportable pressure equipment directive and the simple pressure vessels Directive are not covered by the PED instead they are covered by the Machinery Directive. Based on the pressure equipment’s hazard level which is determined based on stored energy and the nature of contained fluid, there are number of classifications for the pressure equipment in this Directive. Along with the equipments manufacturer’s must also provide adequate instructions, declaration of conformity and maintain a technical file of information related to the design and manufacturing of the products. Pressure equipment should be marked with the CE logo, year of manufacture, serial number and unique identification of model, maximum/minimum allowable pressure limits.

Typical examples of safety accessories include:

  1. Safety valves
  2. Controlled safety pressure relief systems.
  3. Buckling rods
  4. Bursting disc safety devices
  5. Fluid level switches
  6. Pressure switches
  7. Temperature switches

The Pressure Equipment Requirement Directive describes certain protection requirements. According to the protection requirement equipments should be:

  • Provided with protection against exceeding the allowable limits of pressure.
  • Designed for adequate strength taking into account internal/external pressure, ambient and operational temperatures, static pressure and mass of contents in operating and test conditions, traffic, wind, corrosion etc.
  • Provided with the means to ensure safe handling and operation and examination, draining and venting.
  • Where necessary pressure equipment must be designed and fitted with suitable accessories to meet damage-limitation requirements in the event of external fire.

The pressure Equipment Directive has the target of removing all the technical barriers which are related to the supply of pressure equipment throughout the Europe. This Directive is based on Essential Safety Requirements (ESRs) that govern, design, manufacturing, inspection and testing.
